Jeff: Because I’m in a bit of a mood and because the MCQ is busy getting ready for next week’s gig….which means I’ve been writing tons of new stuff, but not recording it just yet…because of all that, here’s a cover tune.  Yeah, sigh.  But don’t fret – it’s a good one.

As my closest friends will tell you, my favorite band ever was the Replacements.  They got me through college, with their scruffy outside-the-mainstream looks and their don’t-give-a-shit-if-you-like-them attitude and their great songs.  Oh, the songs.  What songs.  Seriously, if I could ever write a song 1/4 as good as anything off the Replacements’ 3 classic CDs (Let It Be, Tim, and Pleased To Meet Me) I could go to my grave a happy man.  Today.   Paul Westerberg wore his heart on his sleeve when he wrote songs, and his heart ached…oh, how it ached.

Sometimes, however, his heart didn’t ache.  Sometimes it was pissed off.  That was this song is.  While my favorite song from the ‘Mats (their nickname) repoirtoire is “Left Of The Dial” followed by “Answering Machine” – which are both more of the heart achey kind of songs -  I’ve been in such a foul mood lately (read all about it at my blog, if you dare) that I’ve sat on the front porch and played this song more than once.  It’s a tune off of “Pleased To Meet Me,” and if you you’ve never heard or don’t know who the Replacements are you deserve better.  So go buy “Tim,” “Let It Be,” or “Pleased To Meet Me,” grab a beer, put the kids to bed, put the CD on, sit on the couch, and listen to rock and roll as it was meant to be.

Lyrics:

Get me out of this stinkin’ fresh air
Ninety days in the electric chair
Step right up son
Gonna show you something never been done
You’re all fucked

Listen, it don’t cost much
I lay down the line you touch
Never do what you’re told
There’ll be time, believe me when you’re old
You’re all wrong and I’m right

Please be on your honor
Please be on your

Back in here

Listen to the story all right
I’m losing all I own on that dotted line
Step right up son
Gonna show you something ain’t never been done
You’re all wrong and I’m right

You see I want it in writing
I owe you nothing
Want it in writing
I owe you nothing
Want it in writing, yeah
